  • Southern Party Launch Sparks Media Feeding Frenzy...

Flat Rock, North Carolina - 7 August 1999

The Southern Party held its official launching ceremony in the mountains of western North Carolina to much fanfare and merriment with nearly 200 Southern nationalist supporters in attendance at the exclusive event.  Attendees heard speeches from Southern Party leaders and witnessed the signing of the Ashville Declaration wherein the SP laid before the world the rationale for the party's creation.

Media attention was unprecedented and included journalists representing TV, radio, newsprint and internet news organizations.  The following major media organizations were present: ABC News, CNN, C-SPAN, Reuters, The Associated Press, The (London) Independent, The Australian Broadcasting Company, The New York Times, The Washington Times, WorldNetDaily and National Public Radio.  In addition to the major media organizations, the event was also covered by dozens of local area newspapers, radio and television stations.

One of the highlights of the media blitz was an interview with former SP Chairman George Kalas by ABC's veteran reporter Tim O'Brien which was broadcast later that evening on ABC's World News Tonight.

This media onslaught generated a second-wave of additional media attention in the two-week period following the event - especially on the Internet where the Southern Party became the talk of the town for popular conservative sites like Capitol Hill Blue, Free Republic and WorldNetDaily.  Hits to the SP web site went ballistic with over a 1,000 hits a day for a week following the event and hundreds of new activists came into the party during the month of August as a result of this widespread and largely favorable exposure.

  • Former Southern Party Chairman Kalas heard on radio in 35 STATES...

Houston, Texas - 9 July 1999

Former Southern Party Chairman George Kalas appeared as a guest on the Al Malmberg Show on the CBS owned WCCO radio station, AM 830, in Minneapolis, Minnesota for an hour-long interview on Friday, July 9th.  They discussed Southern independence, secession, tax policy, the constitution, why the 2-party system has failed and a host of other issues related to the Southern Party movement.  Both the host and the callers were cordial and intelligent with their questions and the hour passed most pleasantly.  Because this show broadcasts at 1:05 AM CST, the signal from this 50,000 watt station is heard in about 35 States across America and in much of Canada.

Arlington, Virginia - 6 July 1999

Former Southern Party Chairman George Kalas appeared on Tuesday, July 6th as a guest on "Next Revolution" - a weekly syndicated, conservative television news show produced by Paul Weyrich's Free Congress Foundation.  Hosted by Bill Lind and Cliff Kincaid, "Next Revolution" focus's on bringing "politically incorrect" news to the American people and it is broadcast via satellite to 37 States and an audience of 12 million viewers.

The hosts were very gracious and cordial during the 45 minute interview as they gave very serious consideration to the idea of an independent Southern nation and why such a change in government would be beneficial to the Southern people.   During the editorial commentary at the show's end, co-host Bill Lind even showed off the G.A.R. (Grand Army of the Republic) ring he inherited from his great-grandfather who was a Union war veteran and stated that the North and the South would have been better off if the South had won the War for Southern Independence!  This endorsement of our cause was truly heartwarming.

  • Southern Party featured in the Times of London...

London, England - 3 July 1999

The Southern Party was mentioned in an editorial on the South in the Times of London by editorial writer Ben MacIntryre, following an interview with Southern Party 1st Vice Chairman Jerry Baxley.  While dismissive of the South's Confederate heritage and the prospects of the SP, it nonetheless marks the first note of the SP's emergence on the American political scene by a major British media organization.  One wonders how dismissive they'll be of secessionist parties once the SNP frees Scotland from the clutches of the English?
